Our vision for the future of urban forests across Alberta is a resilient, sustainable living system, protected and cared for through shared stewardship, where communities and civic partners collaborate to increase capacity in support of their long-term health, ecological function, as well as the social and economic wellbeing of the people who live within them.
Trees in cities help keep neighbourhood’s cooler, air cleaner, and water moving more safely through these landscapes while also shaping streets and neighbourhoods in ways that support safety, wellbeing, and everyday connection. These urban forests sustain wildlife habitats, biodiversity, pollination networks, and ecological stability. As cities grow, the balance between built spaces and living systems shifts, setting off a cascade of effects that reshape environmental conditions, strain ecological function, and impact everyday life in our communities. Our work brings together research and real-world experience from communities around the world to help people understand what is changing and how they can help in caring for these green spaces.
